Preliminary Task - The Game

This is our groups preliminary task, the scenario for our task was about a game on the computer called "The Maze Game" and Scott went to play the game for the very first time to prove to his friend (myself) that he was not scared of a challenge. The aim of this preliminary task was to show that we knew how to use the 180 degree rule when on camera, which is what we did. We made sure that the camera person (Chelsea) showed the change of the camera angles accurately to make the clip more realistic to the audience, and we also ensured that there was at least 30 degrees between the shots of the same subject, we did that because we wanted our clip to look as good as it should.

There was one type of shot that we used quite a lot in our preliminary task, and that shot was called "over the shoulder shot" or "shot/reverse shot". Myself and my group decided that it would be a good idea to use that specific type of shot because not only did we want the audience to see myself and Scott having a conversation, but we also wanted the audience to be able to see the different emotions on our faces, and the camera was able to do that because when  the camera was focusing on myself, the camera was placed over Scotts shoulder so the audience could see and hear me talking to Scott, and when Scott was talking the camera was placed over my my shoulder so the audience was able to see and hear Scott talk to me, and when we was both talking to eachother the camera was put in front of us at a medium shot so the audience was able to see both of us. Also there was a moment in the film where Scott said "try me" and we decided that to make that line stand out from the rest, there would be a close up on his face where he would do a facial expression that told the audience that he was not scared to try anything new.

The image below shows myself and Scott talking and the camera is placed in front of us at a medium shot.

The image below shows Scott and his facial expression where the camera is focusing on his face at a close up.

The image below shows a "over the shoulder shot" where the audience can see Scott talking.

The image below shows another "over the shoulder shot" where the audience are able to see myself talking.

Preliminary Research

Continuity editing is where you select the good bits of the film and then edit them onto the film to make it look more intresting for the audeince. The two different types of cutting that may be included are 'Spatial cutting' and 'Temporal cutting'.Temporal cutting is when the different shots are used to show that the narratives have indeed changed. Spatial cutting is used to create unified space through the editing shots from different angles and framing, for example shot/reverse shot, the kuleshow effect and parallel editing.

Spatial editing includes the 180 degree rule, which is where you imagine that there is a line going through the room at 180 degrees, the camera person must follow these rules in ordeer to stay on one side. If at any point the camera person wants to change camera angles, they must show the movement accuratley otherwise the film will not look as realistic. Also there has to be at leat 30 degrees between the shots of the same subject, because otherwise the film again wouldnt look as good as it should.

If two people were having a conversation, i think the best shot that could be used is called a 'over the shoulder' shot because, when the camera is filming from over a persons shoulder, not only does it show the two people having a conversation, but the audience will be able to see the emotion on the persons face. Below is a picture of a over the shoulder shot. This is often known as a shot/reverse shot because because it can be a techinque used where two people are shown looking at eachother from different directions.

Match on action shot is where you match the camera shot used, to the action that has been played out. Here is an example:

In the two images above, you can see that the camera has used two different types of shots, one of them is a medium close up and the other used is a close up. Both of these images are Match on action shots because the camera has followed round the woman and you can see that when she begins to open the book, the shot that best fits the action is a medium close up, which then follows onto the woman fully opening her book with the camera shot of a close up because that is the shot that best potrays the action.

In my opinion, continuity editing is essential in the process of film making because it is important that the film itself runs as smooth as possible so the audeince can enjoy watching the film, without noticing those little shots that occur in between scenes.

Genre Conventions-Final Decisions

For our costumes, we have decided to go really over the top and exaggerated with our costumes because of our comedy horror genre. For example in Scary movie the killers costume is very over the top with a black cloak and a scary mask . At the beginning of the film the Heroine would be very vein and a girly girl with make up and nice clothing as the only thing she really cares about is her looks, but towards the end of the film she realises that she must put others first because their lives are in danger. The geek would wear something like a checkered shirt and glasses to signify his type of character. The Innocent one who turns out to be the geeks friend would act very childish and during the film opening he experiments with womens clothing when he incidently becomes the first victim. And the helper would wear something similar to the friend.

Lighting in our film will be very important but because of where we are setting which will be in the woods, we imagine that it will be quite dark when filming because we want to create that scary effect on the audeince to get them excited, it will also create alot of mystery and make the audience feel a little scared, but the lights from around the camping site should help bring contrast to where the good and evil take place. Lighting will will help because shadows that will fall on the villains face will also help make the audience convinced that he is defiantly the villianin this film. The shadows created by the moving tree branches, will help as this will also show that it’s a very dark and broody place where we are and there isn't much that going to be surrounding us. Also the lighting is usually low key and very dark, and the contrast will be used to over exaggerate shadows.

Props is another very important area for our film as we are doing a comedy horror,we have to use a prop that will amuse the audience but also a prop can do some damage to the victim. For example when the killer attempts to murder his first victim,he will use a banana as this isn't dangerous weapon but it makes the comedy elements of our film show even more, as no one will believe that someone will be killed with a banana.

Mis - En - Scene is actually very easy for us to accomplish due to our location of our film, the wooded area gives us the scary mysterious setting we need to achieve our theme and genre goals. Due to us setting the film at night the dark shadowy trees will reflect the moonlight creating a mysterious effect through the trees and focus all attention on the lights around the camp site. this creates the focus on the campsite but remains that the area that is in darkness is the most scaryest part of the setting.

Treatment Update

The set up for our film opening is set in a park. We decided that the wooded area for the film would create a tense atmosphere as it invites the emotion of being scared into the audience as they know that the woods is a quiet, isolated and threatening place to be, especially in the dark. Also the horror genre portrays the woods as scary because in most horror films people usually get killed in the woods, for example "The Blair Witch Project". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_Hw4bAUj8A

It is set in the woods because it's the ideal place for camping and the audience wont suspect anything.

The Equilibrium in our film is the beginning, where everything is normal. The diserquilibrium is what sets the characters off on the adventure and thats usually where the problem lies, for example in Shrek the diserquilibrium is where he goes on an adventure with the donkey to save princess Fiona.

In our film the diserquilibrium is when the geeky kid (Scott) asks the popular girl (Chelsea) out on a date but she rejects him and then humilates him in front of everyone, then he plans revenge when he is invited to join a group of friends, including the popular girl on a camping trip. The new state equilibrium is the ending of the film and how the characters change throughout the ending.

In our film, the protagonist is Chelsea, who portrays herself as the popular beautiful girl who has a mean streak and a history for breaking boys hearts. Her character changes throughout the film and realises life is not just about her. Towards the end of the film, she portrays herself as the hero/heroine because she tries to solve the murders and goes out of her way to try and find out who his identity is. She also realises that its not just her and her friends at stake, its the whole community.
The adversy in our film is scott, at the beginning of the film he shows himself as being a bit of a geek with no friends, but then the audience see him as a completely different character in the middle of the film. The theory of our film is based on friendship, but with a twist of humliation and love.

The 3 act structure for our film "When The Clock Strikes 12" invoves:
  • The set up- In our film its the setting which is the park/woods.
  • The set back which is when a character is killed due to mistaken identity.
  • The resolution which is the ending, e.g. solving the murders, running away from the killer screaming and shouting and trying to save your own life and others by fighting off the killer and winning.
The Character types for our film are the hero which is Cheslea, because she tries to stop the killer and save everybody, the villian is Scott because when he gets rejected by the popular girl, its the final straw for him so he decides he wants revenge which is what our film is really about. The hero helper (sidekick) in our film is myself because in the film i follow the hero on her adventure to stop the killer and im there to support the hero but also the back her up when things go wrong.

Narratives Theories Research Task

Narrative is used for story telling in a way in which the audeince becomes intrested in a certain film, simply because of the way the story is being told. Narratives are important because without it, the audeince wouldnt be as intrested in the film. Some storytellers start off a story with "Once upon a time.." and thats usually when the audeince for the story is little kids, however "Once" means that the story is set in the past using a past tense and "upon a time" means that the story is in a world thats different to our own. Stories that start with "Once upon a time.." are usually fairytales which makes the story sound more intresing and magical which could make the children want to listen to the story. At the end of the story good defeats bad and its the same sort of ending for films aswell because in most films the hero always wins which brings me to "character type". Character type is just basically defining what each character type in a film is, for example:
  • The Hero is the one that leads the narrative and they are usually looking for something or going on an adventure where they try to solve a mystery or rescue someone.
  • The Villian is the one that has conflicts with the hero where he or she try to take over the world and kill the hero.
  • The Heroine is often described as a prize for the hero.
  • The Father offers a reward to the hero because they managed to complete their quest.
  • The Helper is often described as a "side kick" because of them helping the hero.
  • The Donor is able to give something to the hero so they can complete their mission, i.e. a clue or even a special power.
  • The Mentor teaches and sometimes guides the hero throughout so the hero knows what he's looking for or what he's got to do to complete the quest.
An example of a film which features most of the character types are "Meet the Spartans".

The Hero in "Meet The Spartans" is King Leonidas, he's the hero because his mission is to stop Xerxes from buying the land in which the spartans live. The Villian is Xerxes because he's the bad guy that tries to bribe the king into giving him the land, and when the king refuses Xerxes sets out to humilate and almost kill Leonidas. The Heroine is the kings wife Queen Margo. She is the heroine because aswell as trying to send out more troops to her husband to help him, its almost as if she's a prize to the king because of all the work he has done being king. The Helper/sidekick in the film are the kings soilders, they're the helpers because they are the poeple that help him along the way.

Questionare Results Analysis

This is the questionnaire that myself and my group designed to find out what interests people the most about horror/comedy films. Our questionnaire was aimed at teenagers who are 15+ because our film opening is suitable for people over the age of 15. We asked a range of different questions because we wanted to see which was the most poplualr answer. By looking at our results you are able to see that the one thing about horror/comedy movies that interests our audience is infact the comedy side.

We also found out that our audience likes horror/comedy films and when watching a horror/comedy, they expect to see a lot of blood and gore. Using this information myself and my group are going to be including bits of blood and gore into our film opening but in a way that will give a sense of humour to the audience. We were also able to discover that the audeince is humoured by silly costumes, slapstick and murders when they are watching a horror/comedy film.

This questionnaire has helped myself and my group because now we know what our target audience interest's are when watching horror/comedy films, we are able to take those results, and put them into our film opening so now we have some sort of idea of what our audience's expectations are when watching our film opening.

Final cut introduction

The aim for today was to create a short clip in front of the Whitehouse. The scenario was that aliens were geetting ready to attack the building, but a little while before that happened the news reporter (played by Chelsea) came onto the scene where she interviewed the President (played by myself). The news reporter was asking the president if she knew any thing about the whitehouse supposedly being under attack by aliens or if the whole thing was some sort of government experiment but when i came onto the scene as the president i tried to reassure people that it was not a government experiement and what ever it was myself and my staff were going to get to the bottom of it so nothing bad was going to happen.

Treatment-When the clock strikes 12.

The theme of our film is comedy horror. The main ideas of our film include the characters camping out for the night in a park, in which a killer strikes and kills his first victim in a bizzare way due to mistaken identity.

In our film we have two main characters, the first victim and of course the killer, the killer is called "The Striker" simply because he kills his victims when the clock strikes 12. The killer in our film opning is very distintive because when he kills his victims, he leaves a clue on the victims hand to warn others that he will strike again.

The killers goal in our opening is to manipulate his victims into believeing that he is his or her friend, when really he is plotting against them. the killer makes conversation with his "friends" when he says "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" and that kind of sets the mood for the rest of the opening. The victims goal in all of this is to enjoy a night of camping with his friends.

There is quite alot at stake in this film opening, especially the victims lives because the victim thinks that he going to enjoy a night of camping with his friends where nothing bad can happen to them, but for the audience they will know different. Another thing that is at stake is the killers reputation because although the killer kills his victims in a certain way, there's still a chace that he could get caught.

Audience Research

Audience research is important because without the audience the media text wouldn't have been created. Also when people deceide to buy the dvd they provide income for the production companies which is why it's important that films are advertised.

Demographics are all about how the audience and catergorised, they could be catergorised because of their age, gender, ethnicity, religion and sometimes a persons sexuality. for example different films have a variety of age ratings, most horror films are suitable for 18+ and comedy kids films are either PG or 12+. Another reason why audiences might be catergorised is because of their gender e.g. chick flicks such as "mean girls" and "legally blonde" are the types of films that teenage girls would watch because of whats expected to be in the film e.g. boys, people dressed in pink, comedy and usually romance. Where as an action/horror film e.g. "fast and furious" and "mirrors 2" are usually the type of films that teenage boys would watch because of the conventions in that film e.g. girls, violence and fast cars.

There are some key theories that are shown to explain the medias relationship with the audience, for exapmple the Hypodermic needle effect, this is a theory in which the media is able to "mass manipulate" the audience into believing what they see in a film. But the one that i think best describes the medias relationship with the audience is called the two step flow model, this is where people pass on information about something (usually a film) that they have seen to another person. I think this is the best example because its almost as if a person is advertising the film, simply by telling another person about it which might or might not persuade people to then go and watch the film.

Mood Board

This is the mood board that myself,Chelsea,Rhys and Scott put together. We have created a mood board so we can represent our chosen genre which is comedy/horror. By working as a team we was all able to identify 4 key concepts and show them on the mood board in a way that the audience will be able to understand.

Our 4 key concepts of the mood board are stereotypical blondes, costumes, comedy (comedians) and survivors. We decided that those were our 4 key concepts because when people watch a comedy/horror film, those concepts are the sort of thing that they would expect to see. Costumes are a key concept of a comedy horror because costumes, depending on what they are can be quite scary, but because our genre is comedy horror, the costumes are quite silly. We have decided to put comedians on our mood board because we wanted to show the audience that a comedy horror film isn't just horror with elements of comedy in it, it's a horror with equal amounts of comedy in it.

We also decided to add stereotypical blondes into the mood board because in almost comedy horror or horror film you will see a blonde girl and usually the blonde girl portrays herself as not being very intellectual and they're usually the first ones killed, also they appeal more to the male audience.

Another key concept that we decided to add onto our mood board is survivors. Survivors are one of the main concepts in comedy/horror films there will always be that one person, male or female who will survive til the end whereas the baddy gets defeated. This is almost like a fairytale because they live happily ever after.

Genre Research

A genre is a way of separating films by putting them into different categories, e.g. horror, comedy, action and sci-fi. The advantages of having a genre is that is gives the audience a range of different films to watch that will suit them because everyone has a favourite genre, also by having a genre the audience will know what to expect from their film choices. The disadvantages of having a genre is that they might not always be helpful because what one person expects from a certain genre, might be different to what another person expects, e.g. someone from the 1900's, another disadvantage is its as if the genres are being put into boxes and catergorised, but thats not always helpful because every film is different no matter what genre they have.

The genre we have chosen for our film is a horror/comedy. The conventions of a horror comedy include a serial killer, murders (sometimes can be quite violent), a bit of slapstick that can be quite humourous and funny moments that make the audience laugh. The whole point of a horror comedy is to scare the audeince, but in a way that would also make them laugh, For example the film Tormented (image below) is a horror-comedy because the killings that occur in the film can be quite violent which would want to scare the audience, but there are also silly moments in the film that aim to make the audience laugh.

The genre of horror/comedy goes back to the 19th century, for example one of the first horror/comedy films was called Haunted Spooks (image below) it was about a man who tries to commit suicide because he cannot find love but then he marries this beautiful woman and they move into this mansion but it is spooked by a wicked uncle to tries to scare the couple away so he can have the mansion to himself.

Not only are genres about cateorgerising films, it's also about the directors who help make the films. Foe example a well known director is Keenen Ivory Wayans, he's an amaerican actor, comedian director and writer. He directed the films Scary Movie 1 and 2. I think Keenen Ivory Wayans is a good example because he knows everything there is to know about comedy/horror.

Codes and Conventions of film openings

Most film openings start off by showing the audience the company logo that made the film. In the scary movie (0:01) which you will see below, this shows the audience that Dimension Films made scary movie and the sequels.
However different films are owned by different prouction companies, for example Legally Blonde is owned by the company MGM, here is a picture to show you.

So depending on what film you want to watch, not all of the production companies will be the same.
The genre conventions for the films vary depending on what film you decide to watch, for example if you watch a horror film the audience would expect to see lots of blood/gore and a lot of murders and theres usually a serial killer. Another example is a comedy film, if you were to watch a comedy the audience would expect to see little bits of humour and maybe a bit of slapstick to make them laugh.

The images above are both movie posters from different genres of films, the first poster is of a horror called The Silent House and the second poster is of a comedy called Mr Beans Holliday. By looking at both movie posters, you can see theres a lot of differences between the two genres. In the horror poster the backgrounds black with a red title, also the image is of a girl with blood on her shirt looking scared while holding a latern, this shows that the actual film could be quite scary and broody with bits of blood/gore and violence in it. Unlike the second poster which shows Mr bean stepping out of a train about to go on holiday, in the second poster the background is of a beach with yellow sand and a blue sky and the character Mr Bean looks happy, this shows the audience thats there's going to be a lot of laughter in the film whic is what you would expect when watching a comedy film.

Im most films, whether it's an action, comedy or horror you will see that they seem to have the same actors/actresses playing different characters, for example Carmen Electra has been in different films playing different characters. The 2 images above show her in two different films, in the first image she is in the horror/comedy Scary Movie where she plays a young woman who is about to be killed. In the second image she is in the comedy film Meet The Spartans where she plays the wife of a warrior who is about to go on an adventure to battle.

The camera conventions are the different camera shots used when the film is shown.

The establishing shots for films can be different, for example in the image which is from the film Fred The Movie, the camera shot used is a "birds eye view" because the camera is looking down on the houses so people feel like they are looking down from the sky. However in the image on the right wihch is from the film Scary Movie the camera shot used is a long shot. It is a long shot because the audeince is able to see everything in the shot, the house, the swing and the surroundings.

Film Opening #no.3

This is is the opening scene to the film 'Prom Night', the genre of this film is a slasher. It is a slasher film because these type of films usually consist of a weapon, and in this film the weapon is a knife. The film opens with a young girl arriving home from the cinemas. When she steps out of the car it is dark outside which is how slasher films usually begin, then the background music starts, it starts off as quite slow but its also scary. This builds up tension as the audience do not know what is going to happen but as the music gets deeper the audience will start to guess that something bad is about to happen. When the audience start to see the dead bodies in the house this builds up even more tension because now they know for
certain that something horrible is going to happen, as the girls mom is running away from the man, the music starts to get faster and which builds up to a climax then when she gets killed the music goes slow again.

During the opening scene, you will see lots of different camera angles, but the most common one you will see is a medium shot. In a medium shot you cannot see the whole background so this will make the audience question what is happening or what is going to happen. The only thing that will give you clues as to how the person is feeling or thinking is their facial expressions.

For example in this particular camera shot you can only see the girls upper body and background, this provides a lot of questions for the audience because they know nothing about the girl, they don't know who she is or anything about her background. By looking at her facial expressions I can tell she is quite unsure or puzzled because herself and the audience know that something isn't quite right. Her body language tells me that she could be scared because she seems quite timid and her body is all closed up.

I believe the target audience for this particular film is teenagers and any age above. This is because of the language being used which isn't suitable for children, also there are scenes of violence and other scenes that
a sexual nature which again would not be suitable for young children.

The codes and conventions of this film are dark lighting to show that it is a scary film, bright lighting to show that there are some happy but good moments in the film e.g the prom, the background music to build up the climax. The symbolic codes of this film are the weapon which shows there's going to be a lot of blood/gore and violence, the title of the film and the caption underneath.

The caption underneath the poster says "a night to die for" this is quite an ironic thing to put on the poster because when the prom starts, the characters begin to die one by one until there is only one person out of the whole group still alive, the young girl.

Film Opening #no.2

This is part of the opening scene for the film Fast and Furious (fast and furious 4). The genre of this film is action. I can tell that's it's an action film because when you watch the opening scene, you will see fast cars at high speed, gun violence and a young woman coming close to death. All of these are conventions of an action packed film because when people watch the film, or the opening scene this is the sort of thing that people would expect to see, lots of car speed, explosions, girls and violence/killings. If these conventions was not in a an action film, it wouldn't really be an action film because the audience wouldn't be the least bit interested and they wouldn't be as excited to watch the film.

Another convention of this opening scene is the background music. Although there isn't really any background music, when you watch the opening scene you can hear the sound of speeding cars, cars swerving around on the road and gun shots. This tells the audience that there's going to be a lot of dangerous things happening, which could get the audience excited, also there's a part in the opening where a young woman nearly falls off the truck and she is hanging on with her one arm trying to get back up, then she leaps from the truck onto the car bonnet. This also tells the audience that not only are dangerous things happening, but also peoples lives are going to be at high risk. This could keep the audience watching because they might want to know what happens next.

The target audience for this film are teenagers and adults because there is quite a lot of explosions, car chases, violent murders and there are one or two sex scenes throughout the film. This film wouldn't be suitable for children under the age of 15/16 because the film itself could be a bad influence on its audience. For example if a child watches this film, they might think that what is going on in the film is okay to do in real life and they could end up in serious trouble.

The symbolic codes of this film are the fast cars to signify that the film is going to be an action genre, the girls  signify the sexual nature which is part of the film and the gun shots which signify violence.

Film Opening

This is the opening scene of the film Scary Movie, the genre of this opening is a comedy horror.
When people watch this opening scene they will expect to see a horror film, that has elements of comedy in it.
One of the symbolic codes of this particular opening scene is the part when the young girl is running out of the house and she stops to find two signs, one"safety" and one "death" but she runs away from the safety sign. this suggests that that she has chosen the death sign which means she is going to die because she did not choose safety. Another symbolic code is when the killer is in the house and she has a range of different weapons, but instead of going for the gun or knife, she chooses a banana. This might suggest to the audience that she panicked therefore she just picked up anything she could to try and  fend of the killer.

At the beginning of the film, there is no background music, but as the killer and the girl start talking on the phone and she gets scared by him watching her from outside, the background music starts to play building up tension which gets the audience excited because it's all reaching a certain level of climax until eventually something happens.

When i watched the opening scene i expected it to be quite funny but i also wanted it to make me jump, and it did especially when the killer suprised the young girl by apprearing from the curtain when she turned around.
Throughout the film you will a range of different camera angles, but the most common one you will see is medium shots however other shots you will see are close ups.

This is a close-up taken from the opening scene. In most close ups you can only see the persons face and some of  there surroundings, as you can see the woman is on the phone and this creates a tense atomsphere for the audience because they don't know her name or who she is talking to on the phone.
Her surroundings indicate that she is in a house which might tell the audience that the young woman is safe, but by looking at her facial expressions it tells me different because she looks scared and unsure of what her next movement will be. Also it seems that she is looking elsewhere, maybe outside? this again creates tension because the unknown person who is on the other end of the phone could be watching her.

A movie poster for my groups film genre

This is the film scary movie, the genre of this film is a comedy horror. The reason it is a comedy horror is because it is aimed to make the people who watch it laugh, but to also scare them a little bit. Dim lighting is used for the scary scenes of the film, and high key lighting is used for the funny scenes.

By look at the poster, people might be able to tell the film is a mixture of comedy and horror because of the killers facial expressions. when people look at the killers face, normally they might feel quite scared or intimated, but when people look at this particular killer and how he's smiling, people might laugh and find it funny because you wouldn't expect a masked serial killer to smile.

The poster is there to advertise the film, persuading people to watch it and it is there to show people that it is a funny, but scary kind of film which will or will not get people to watch the film.

When the audience look at the poster, they wont just be looking at the characters, they will be looking at the background. The background is very important because in this particular poster because it sets the scene for the film. for example the film is called "scary movie" and as you can see the poster background is set so the different characters are in the cinema with there popcorn and there about tho watch a "scary movie" just like in this image below.

The three conventions of this film are dim lighting, to create a scary effect on the audience when they watch the movie, dark clothing to show who the villain really is, and finally the scary characters to remind people that the film is a mix between comedy and horror.

First Decision

Our first decision was deciding who was in our group, when making the opening to our film. In our group we have myself, Chelsea Jay,Rhys Birch and Scott Cook.

We then decided what our genre was going to be, which is a horror/comedy.

Analysing Movie Poster

The three codes and conventions of the film are, strong lighting because the movie poster is very bright and colorful, which shows that by looking at it that its a very funny and laughable which is what people would expect when they watch a comedy film.
The camera angle for this particular movie poster is a long shot.  It's a long shot because you can see the whole of the poster including the woman, her dog and the people behind her. The reason you can see the whole of the woman is because the film is based around her looks, her personality and the fact that the woman is blonde is really what the whole film is about.
The audience for this comedy is aimed at females. It is mostly aimed at females because the film is associated with the colour pink, which is quite a girly colour. The woman's dog is also in this poster which is very important because it signifies the fact that the woman is very feminine due to the fact that she dressed her dog in pink to match her outfit.
